Hello, I'm Zachary.

I'm a Software Engineer focused on sports analytics

About Me

Zachary Wu professional headshot

I’m Zachary Wu, a student at the University of Washington studying Applied Mathematics and Informatics. My work centers on building end-to-end data products for sports teams, from the underlying predictive models to the production web tools.

I specialize in the intersection of sports analytics, machine learning, and full-stack software engineering. My background spans developing internal scouting and tracking tools for the Washington Nationals, engineering TrackMan pipelines and Machine Learning models for UW Baseball, and building scalable full-stack applications with React, Node.js, Ruby on Rails, and SQL.

Combining a double major in Applied Math and Informatics with leadership experience as a UW Computer Science Teaching Assistant, I pair mathematical modeling (Python, R, XGBoost) with full-stack execution (JavaScript, React, Rails, SQL) to create intuitive solutions for modern front offices and athletic programs.

Featured Projects

UW Hitters Dashboard
UW Hitters Dashboard
This full-stack web application analyzes player hitting statistics. The frontend features interactive 3D visualizations of batted balls, and the ability for users to filter pitches by a wide variety of metrics. The backend serves data from a SQLite database via a RESTful API, enabling users to filter pitches, view detailed player statistics, compare players, and export data. This project provides a comprehensive platform for coaches and players to gain deep insights from hitting data.

Multifaceted Analysis of NBA Data using R and Social Network Analysis
Multifaceted Analysis of NBA Data using R and Social Network Analysis
Used R to clean, manipulate, and analyze NBA datasets, generating insights through visualizations and comparisons. Conducted Social Network Analysis in Gephi on player relationships and game flow, using network graphs to detect key playmakers and hidden team dynamics.
RPythonGephiData Visualization
HuffmanCode
HuffmanCode
Designed and implemented a Huffman coding algorithm to efficiently compress data, demonstrating abilities in data structures and algorithms. Optimized data compression processes by developing custom implementations of the Huffman coding technique, resulting in a 30-70% decrease in file size.
